A message from the Chair on behalf of all Cardiff u3a members:

The ethos of the u3a movement of which you are a Cardiff member is in essence very straightforward.

It’s about having fun and socialising. You meet new people with a common interest and you will find many other interests that you share with them. Each u3a runs interest groups, chosen and run by the members, on a wide range of subjects – both for learning and to keep active. Members form interest-based communities, where they learn from and with each other.

Cardiff u3a does not ‘just happen’ it has a structure which ensures that groups are formed, administered and run. Without a structure there would not be a Cardiff or indeed any u3a. That structure has at its head your Cardiff u3a committee which is responsible for the governance including directing how it is managed and run. We are now at the midpoint of the Cardiff u3a administrative year which ends in November with the AGM and is quickly followed by the formation of a new committee.

Constitutional rules dictate that certain key administrative roles have to finish at that AGM including Chair, Membership Secretary and Group Coordinator. A full committee has maximum of 12 members and we have at the moment currently 7 meaning that a number of committee members are carrying out more than one role. We are therefore in need of more committee members now as well as from November.

The roles of Magazine Editor, Open and General Meeting Organiser and Publicity Coordinator also require new people in November. 

We have a small number of non-committee post holders and to those go our grateful thanks. Non committee roles are varied according to needs, including helping with facilitating at occasional meetings, I.T. tasks and assisting the publicity team. 

And so, my fellow Cardiff u3a members: ask not what your u3a could do for you – ask what you could do for your u3a. (With thanks to JF Kennedy)
