Arts Active Cardiff Classical

These concerts will be presented by Arts Active, the community learning and partnerships outreach department for Cardiff Council, formerly based at St David’s Hall.

Lunchtime Classical Concerts & Recitals.

This programme profiles many established and well renowned musicians along with supporting emerging artists from across Wales, the UK and Europe.  These one-hour recitals will take place in the city centre at Eglwys Dewi Sant, St Andrews Crescent, on the first Tuesday of every month..

They are accessible, relaxing, informal and a perfect introduction for anyone new to the classical music scene or for those who are passionate enthusiasts of classical music. Either way, you  can pop along and enjoy these during a lunchtime break, make an afternoon of it with friends or family, or simply come along yourself and enjoy!

Picturing Children’s Stories – a new Zooniverse project

Zooniverse is thrilled to announce Picturing Children’s Stories, a new Citizen Readers project that invites you to explore the rich visual tradition of children’s book illustrations—while helping advance cutting-edge research.

Over the past two centuries, picture books have helped shape how young readers imagine the world. But how have those illustrations evolved? What emotions, values, and visual themes have illustrators used to depict childhood, storytelling, and learning? With your help, we’re building a large, open dataset of image descriptions to answer these questions at scale for the very first time.

As a volunteer, you’ll be asked to describe the scenes, characters, and emotional intensity you see in historical images drawn from the Children’s Book collection at the Internet Archive. These annotations will help scholars trace patterns in visual storytelling across time—and train AI models to recognize how books reflect changing cultural ideas.

This is not about generating AI art. Our aim is to develop AI tools that can study storytelling, not replace it. By supporting researchers in analyzing massive digital libraries, your contributions will help make the visual record of illustrated books more accessible, interpretable, and meaningful.

Join us in uncovering the emotional and imaginative world of illustrated children’s stories—and contribute to a more inclusive, transparent approach to AI and the humanities.

New Registration Champions Scheme launches

Cardiff Council’s Electoral Services team has launched a new scheme that seeks to harness the experience and passion of older residents about democracy.

The team already runs a very successful engagement initiative for young residents with the Democracy Ambassador Programme for Cardiff schools, that includes visits to County Hall and the Senedd as well as school-based workshops.

The service is now seeking to enlist the help of older people who can support others to participate in the democratic process, by telling their own inspiring stories which can be shared with younger generations through school workshops or assemblies. These stories will help young people understand the importance of our democracy and their role in it, ensuring that everyone’s rights are upheld.

Champions will also support older residents to register to vote and help them to participate in elections.

Cardiff’s Returning Officer, Paul Orders, said: “We are eager to hear from individuals who have experienced pivotal moments in history, particularly when significant laws were enacted that profoundly impacted their lives. We invite those people to share their stories and experiences to inspire others about the importance of participating in the democratic process, and one of the most important things anyone can do in that respect is registering to vote and ensuring they exercise their right to vote.

“We’re looking for people who are passionate about these things and are willing to be involved in hosting events, like coffee mornings and activities with older citizens to discuss voting rights, accessibility to voting, and ways we can improve the voting process in Cardiff to ensure it is accessible to all.”
